In an effort to better serve the medical needs of Downeast Maine, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital constructed a regional medical center in Bucksport.

Once the original town armory in the 1800s and a neighborhood hardware store through the 1940s and 1960s, this site was selected for its advantageous “downtown” location. During construction, Nickerson & O’Day worked hand-in-hand with architect Lewis & Malm to overcome significant challenges such as fire and mold remediation, existing foundation/floor reconstruction, and the removal and replacement of the buildings’ entire superstructure—none of which were contemplated in the original design. Despite these hurdles, the effort was completed only four months later than originally planned despite the 125% increase in design budget and construction scope.
