Constructed to LEED Gold Standards, this state-of-the-art, 20,000 SF bus maintenance, and LP gas refueling facility includes solar panel hot-water system, sun-tube daylighting, and a high-efficiency lighting system. With a 4,000 foot setback, the site required a two-lane entrance road and stream crossing. It completes the first phase of what will become the Acadia National Park Visitor Center at the “gateway to Mount Desert Island”.

It is anticipated to reduce the mileage of the Island Explorer buses by just over 10 million miles. The roof consists of materials with a high SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) value. It is showing a 38.3% improvement in energy efficiency over the baseline estimate. Ninety-nine percent of the occupied areas have access to views.
