In 2008, Nickerson & O’Day was awarded the contract to complete a much needed renovation on Coburn Hall at the University of Maine, Orono. Due to deferred maintenance, the building fell into extreme disrepair and structural repairs were needed in order to preserve the building.

For the exterior, all windows were replicated and replaced. The substantially deteriorated brick casings were rebuilt. The entire brick facade, which had deteriorated to the point it swayed in the wind, was structurally reinforced and repointed.  The slate roof was removed to allow the underlying structure to be rebuilt. The original slate roofing was then reinstalled along with new pieces to match the existing style along with new copper flashing.

Interior renovations included adding reinforced structural steel struts to the west facade to support the brick work. In June 2011 Nickerson & O’Day received the Maine Preservation Honor Award for their excellent work on this painstaking renovation.
